You’re Invited

Howdy everyone.

I am not going to say anything dramatic or sappy. No big announcement or tearful goodbye. Because this isn’t goodbye. Not even close! It’s an invitation to a new party, happening elsewhere.

I’ve decided to move Spinning Visions over to Substack for a better experience.

If you are signed up for my newsletter, you likely know this already. But here we are formally, with the details. RSVP if you so choose. I hope you do.

Why?

For a better experience. For a wider reach. For a bigger community. Because everyone and their mother asks me if I have a Substack and I wanted to see what all the hoopla was about. Because my book is done and I needed something else to pour all of my time and creative impulses into. Because I want to share the personal details of my life again. (more on that last one below)

I was originally just going to run a new column on Substack, but quickly fell in love with it and decided, which, has been a long time coming really, to move all of Spinning Visions over full-time. The full archive will live here. We’re starting fresh over there.

If you are signed up to receive emails, you might have seen this already. If you are not, let me explain.

How Does it Work?

Here’s the deal. Spinning Visions will remain the blog you, if you are here, hopefully know and love. Long personal essays detailing my life and how it feels at any given moment. Book reviews. Art talk. Heart talk. All the things that have lived and breathed in this space for the past 3 years.

Plus, some new stuff.

Inspired by long rambling texts send to friends asking for help and heartfelt emails from readers, I decided to launch a new column within Spinning Visions called “Since You Asked…” Because I am in my 20s and that is about all of life that I know so far, it is mainly for people in that same stage of life.

It’s a space for burning 2 a.m. questions that you don’t want to ask your friends. Relationships, girlhood, adulthood, mental health, early career advice, existential dread, etc.

Am I by any means qualified for such a role? Heavens no! But I enjoy it, and so far, so have many of you. I think that’s reason enough.

Readers (kept anonymous) email their questions and/or conversation topics to sinceeyouasked@gmail.com and I respond in the column.

Is it Paywalled?

Spinning Visions will remain mostly free.

As mentioned above, I miss sharing my life through intimate essays. But ever since I moved to New York and fell in love and began living a life that involved people other than just myself, it’s been harder to do that. To write about my life is to now, by proxy, write about lives of others.

I was quite young when I started this blog, but I am older now. Lately, I have found myself writing around concepts instead of delving fully into them because there is always something holding me back. I am no longer writing about college lectures and comically bad dates. It’s no longer just me.

Because of that, the deepest, most personal pieces will be for paying subscribers only.

As for the advice column, it is sometimes fun and light. But it is also sometimes complex and emotional in a way that requires me to dive into my own intimate archive of experience in order to fully respond.

In order to create a safer space, the most revealing and private columns will be for paying subscribers.

The point is less about money and more about privacy. If you’re unsure, if you take a radical stance against paywalls, no problem. You can still enjoy the free content.

But if you do find yourself wanting more, we would love to have you.
