This Much Was True, my first book, is available now!
You spend years on a project and then it is done, and suddenly you don’t know what to do with your hands. With the hours between 6 p.m and 1 a.m. With all the tabbed pages and scraps of paper with random ideas scrawled across them and questions for anyone who would listen.
What I can tell you is that this book started on this blog, which means its started with all of you. It began in the essays some of you have been reading for years, the ones about girlhood and memory and growing up and all the ways those things stay with you longer than anyone warns you they will. You were the first people I told these stories to. It felt right that you’d be among the first to hold them.
This Much Was True begins on the coast of California and ends under the lights of New York City. It travels through fractured friendships, a global pandemic, relationships, and stubborn dreams.
It is the most honest thing I have ever written, which also makes it the most terrifying thing I have ever published.
I wrote it because I wanted to better understand it. I wrote it because I wanted to better understand myself. And, because so many of you, over the years, showed up in the comments and emails and messages to tell me that what I was writing felt like yours too. You asked me to keep writing, so I did. Thank you.
This started as something just for me, but I hope now, it can be for you too.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
